Josie is a teen journalist - even if her family doesn’t take her work as seriously as she does. However, all that is about to change, as Josie won the opportunity to write a celebrity profile for Deep Focus - this opportunity could potentially throw her into greater heights as a writer. As Josie sets on a multi-city tour, she gets to know the cast and creative crew behind the latest Oscar bait film and even begins to develop a little bit of a crush on the subject of her profile, newcomer actor Marius Canet. But when Josie meets a young actress and gains her confidence, a dark secret is revealed and Josie has to decide whether she is the right person to write this story - or even if she can.
After reading Off The Record, I want to protect Camryn Garrett at all costs - she are so good at writing characters that cut deep to your heart, whether it is through discussing sexual assault or the highs and lows of teenage romance. Every time Josie spoke or tweeted, she came off as authentic and so damn relatable, even amongst the terrible situations that she was learning of. Off The Record is great for a thoughtful read that makes you want to go on a justice crusade afterwards.
Now it is time for the jewel of this post: my actual, real-time reactions to reading Off the Record. It was a TIME reading this while I was at work as I kept having to make sure I wasn't too visibly upset. Afterwards, I was looking through and realized that I had to narrow it all down to maybe a third of the original size. 😳 Get ready y'all for my no context reactions...
